Testing early is one of the most common reasons for a false negative pregnancy test result. Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
It can take around ten days or more after conception for hCG to rise to detectable levels. This is why testing too early can result in a false negative, since hCG levels are too low.
For the most accurate result, it is recommended to wait one to two days after a missed period. If your period still has not started and you continue to suspect pregnancy, repeat testing in a few days to a week.
Using a pregnancy test the wrong way can yield inaccurate results. Follow the instructions carefully, paying close attention to when to read the result and how to interpret the test.
Pregnancy tests are often most accurate when taken with the first urine of the day because urine is typically the most concentrated in the morning after waking up. Testing later in the day with diluted urine can affect your results if your hCG levels are low.
Also make sure the pregnancy test has not expired. Additionally, most pregnancy tests have a control line that appears whether you’re pregnant or not. If this line doesn’t appear, the test is considered invalid.
Factors such as irregular periods can make it harder to know when to take a pregnancy test. You may need to take multiple tests over different time periods to be sure of your result. You can also try counting 36 days since your last menstrual cycle or four weeks since the last time you had sex.
Pregnancy tests are generally accurate when used correctly, but they only detect the presence of hCG and do not tell you how the pregnancy is developing.
A limited ultrasound will be able to tell you how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, and whether the pregnancy appears to be developing, all important details which can influence your options and protect your health.
Knowing where the pregnancy is located can help identify an ectopic pregnancy, which is where the pregnancy implants outside of the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube. This requires urgent medical attention.
Nova Women’s Health offers no-cost limited ultrasounds to provide you with these important details.
