Abortion
Abortion may be a pregnancy option you’re considering as you navigate an unplanned pregnancy. It’s a medical decision that requires education and pregnancy confirmation.
We offer no-cost pregnancy services so you can first understand your pregnancy and what you may be eligible for moving forward. We’re here to educate you about the potential risks and what you might expect.
What to Know About Abortion Types
We want to give you the facts about both types of abortion: medical abortion and surgical abortion. These procedures are done at different points of pregnancy and come with unique risks to consider.
It’s important to understand how far along you are before undergoing any type of abortion procedure to safeguard your health.
Medical abortion is only recommended by the FDA for women within a limited timeframe.
1. Medical Abortion
A medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, consists of two different drugs that terminate an existing pregnancy. First, mifepristone is taken, which blocks the hormone progesterone and terminates the pregnancy.
Second, misoprostol is taken and causes the uterus to contract and release all pregnancy-related tissue through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.
2. Surgical Abortion
There are two main types of surgical abortion procedures: dilation & evacuation (D&E) and dilation & curettage (D&C). Both of these abortion procedures work to dilate (open) the cervix and incorporate surgical tools to remove the pregnancy from the uterus.
