Getting the courage to tell your parents you’re pregnant can feel overwhelming. You are braver than you know. Give yourself grace as you navigate this unexpected time, and know that you are not alone along the way. At Nova Women’s Health, we’re here to support you along the way.

Find Time to Process Yourself

Hearing the news of a pregnancy can be initially shocking. Give yourself a day (or a couple) to let the news settle and catch up with all your emotions. This step can help you feel less overwhelmed when hearing what your parents have to say about your pregnancy situation.

If needed, talk to a trusted friend or someone you trust about how you’re feeling. If you’re nervous about how your parents will react, working through some of your emotions before having the conversation can help you feel more at ease and connected to your own heart.

Pick the Right Time & Place

While it can be nerve-racking to discuss your pregnancy with your parents, lighten the mood by intentionally choosing a convenient time and place.

Everyone is more relaxed on the weekend. If possible, choose a weekend or a time when your parents are off work to share the news.

Privacy is important, too, when talking with your parents about your unplanned pregnancy. Talk to them in a private place like their home or your home so they feel comfortable to respond.

Be a Great Listener

While it’s tempting to interrupt your parents if their reaction isn’t exactly what you expected, it’s best to give them the time and space to react. Listen to their input and answer any questions they may have.

We want to note that it’s never okay for a parent to pressure you into a pregnancy decision you don’t want to make. Ultimately, you decide what’s next.
